Chapter 25

The week trudged by, with Luke alternating between class, work, and working out. The anticipation of the concert—and the relief of knowing his extra ticket would go to good use—tugged Luke’s mind inexorably towards the weekend, making it tough to focus on the mundane stuff of life in the meantime.

Miriam had been unexpectedly receptive to his offer of his spare concert ticket. Even when he’d forwarded more details, like how it was not just one show but an all-day festival that lasted two days with multiple bands, she’d been surprisingly chill about the whole thing.

In fact she’d texted him the following: I looked at the lineup, there are at least two bands I’ve been wanting to see, one each day. If you want to go for the whole day, want to take turns bringing food?

That had become a whole logistics discussion, alternating with the ongoing discussion about how their group project was going and when they’d get feedback on this latest assignment.

In the end, they had a plan to meet at Luke’s and carpool down to where Shinu’s cousin lived near Garfeld Park, so they could park there and walk over to the event, rather than paying the extremely up-charged parking on site.

When Saturday morning arrived, Luke was up early. He made coffee for himself and his mom, and kissed her on the cheek when delivering her mug in bed. A croissant completed the delivery.

“Thank you, honey. You’re up early,” she observed.

“Today’s the music festival!” Luke took a giant swig of his own mug.

“Well, I’ve got the day off and I’m looking forward to some peace and quiet.”

“Don’t worry, Miriam’s just coming over to drive there with me, we won’t bother you.”

His mom arched an eyebrow at that but said nothing.

Luke whipped out some sets of pull-ups and push-ups between bouts of food prep. He didn’t want to risk using up all his endurance by going for a run, and then not feel up to being on his feet for large stretches of time at the festival. He made egg salad and packed it in a separate container, so it wouldn’t get the croissants soggy. He washed lettuce leaves to go into the sandwiches, then packed some apples and granola bars. It was simple, but it would do.

Miriam pulled up to his place at eleven. She got out of her car, looking delicate with a black lace parasol held over her head. She was wearing the same black wide-brimmed hat she’d sent him a selfie in last weekend, and a pair of black denim shorts with a T-shirt from one of the bands they were seeing. Large sunglasses completed the look.

“Right on time,” Luke said, loading the small cooler bag into his car. He knew they looked like polar opposites, her all dark and gothy and him in a bright red shirt of the band he was looking forward to seeing that day, plus faded jean shorts. Of course, the shirt was coming off if the weather stayed nice; that was one of the perks of an outdoor concert.
